Mission

WITNESS uses video to open the eyes of the world to human rights violations. WITNESS empowers people to transform personal stories of abuse into powerful tools for justice, promoting public engagement and policy change.

What We Do

WITNESS uses video to expose human rights abuse and create change.

We train and equip people all over the world to use video in their fight for human rights. From struggles for democracy in the Middle East, to groups working to end forced evictions in Brazil, to women advocating against gender-based violence in Uganda, we partner with activists in critical situations to teach them video basics, safe filming techniques, and how to create videos that stand a better chance of making a difference.

We create award-winning tools to keep activists and their footage safer. And we advocate at the highest levels for technology and policy change – to entities like Facebook, Twitter, Google and the International Criminal Court – to make sure that anyone seeking to protect and defend human rights with video can do so safely and effectively.

The majority of the world’s population now has a camera in their pocket. WITNESS is here to make sure that anyone who wants to use video to create human rights change has the skills, tools and the know-how to make a difference.
