Additional details
The MLC has been serving low income youth and families for over 40 years but has experienced some mission drift, lack of clarity around programming, high staff turnover, and an Executive Director who will be leaving her position after 4 decades of service. Clarifying the mission, vision, and values of the organization will help provide the staff and succession team with the information they need to support a new ED and ensure the continued success of the program.
What we have in place
- We currently have a mission and values statement, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have staff who have worked at the organization for decades, a parent-led Board of Directors,, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $7,248 , allowing us to provide 10 4-week summer camp scholarships for low income youth in the Mystic Housing Development.
The success of our organization depends on the long-term sustainability of its programming. Without your help, we cannot assess our strengths and weaknesses and clarify our goals. Your skills will empower us to ensure we can continue to serve high need populations.

Our mission
Founded in 1971, the mission of the Mystic Learning Center is to improve the lives of low-income children and families who live at the Mystic Public Housing Development in East Somerville, MA. Our innovative service model uses Mystic parents and teens to manage and design all aspects of the program to meet the needs of the community. By being active participants in MLC, residents have the opportunity to enhance their own personal development, have an impact on the program, and contribute to community life. MLC brings residents together for mutual support to overcome persistent poverty while creating a healthier community.
What we do
The Mystic Learning Center operates as a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt, non-profit organization and is licensed to provide school age child care by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MLC offers year round educational and recreational activities for youth ages 5-23 during after-school, evening, school-year and summer vacation. We provide high quality care, enrichment opportunities, field trips, family events and more to youth and families who otherwise might not have access to these opportunities.
