Project details
What we need
- A written analysis of the Organization's position in the community it serves and its ability to address identified needs/problems for its beneficiaries
- A summary of the Organization's strengths and weaknesses, related to its program goals as needed
- A summary of competitors or potential collaborators
- An appendix of all data gathered to perform analysis, including sources
Additional details
Oikonos is developing a new program using machine learning (AI) to automate marine debris detection from aerial imagery: https://conservationx.com/project/id/216/mappingmarinedebris
We need help identifying existing efforts, exploring potential applications and long-term benefits, and then narrowing our scope to what our project team can accomplish. Mostly, we need someone to research competitors and potential collaborators, what they're promising, and what challenges they've faced.
What we have in place
- We currently have an existing project with a basic outline of goals and objectives. We have a core team of two leaders and four volunteers to support planning and implementation. We've done a bit of preliminary research of literature, competitors, and other efforts worldwide. We also have a supportive collaborative community on the platform Conservation X Labs https://conservationx.com/project/id/216/mappingmarinedebris
How this will help
This project will save us $10,948 , allowing us to focus our limited resources on identifying funding, partnerships, and supporting the myriad of other projects that Oikonos is leading.
Oikonos works in imperiled ecosystems, and our oceans are seriously threatened by marine debris. Automating detection has implications for monitoring, research, prevention, and policy on a global scale. Machine learning has enormous potential that we are only just beginning to understand, particularly as it applies to marine debris.
Project plan
Our mission
Oikonos studies and protects imperiled ecosystems by engaging diverse communities through innovative scientific and artistic collaborations.
What we do
We work in locations throughout the Pacific applying expertise in five priority areas: Biodiversity Conservation, Habitat Restoration, Ecosystem Science, Conservation Tools, and Career Training & Education.
Oikonos' goals are as varied as our projects, but across all programs we endeavor to accomplish the following:
(1) Protect breeding habitats, food webs, and populations.
(2) Improve the conservation status of threatened species.
(3) Incorporate biodiversity and ecosystem knowledge into policies and society.
(4) Create lasting stewardship of critical habitats and wildlife through community partnerships.
(5) Establish transdisciplinary collaborations that develop tools and solutions.
